HELHEIM from Bergen with their 2nd studio album. In 1997 the Messrs Hrimgrimnir, Vanargandr & Hrymr released the ''Av Norron Aett'' produced in the legendary Grieghallen, an album that had cult potential in the scene in record time & was a great progression for the band. This album saw the band take their Viking Metal to new levels with the use of mouth-harp, piano, trumpets, fiddle and female vocals together with the normal instrumentation. Already the suspense that extends from the sometimes jazzy piano intro far into the first song belongs immediately in the textbooks for black metal bands and the rest of ''Av Norron Aett'' immediately afterwards. Again and again, bludgeoning blast parts are introduced by miraculous as well as ingenious breaks or progressive fill inns, rousing melodies are alternately accompanied by Viking choirs, lovely female vocals or wonderfully odd screeching. However, the catchiness is never lost. Thanks to Odin, the highest level of playing is not messed up with overloaded, unusable technology. All of this comes in a gracefully designed booklet, which skilfully rounds off the taste of an exclusive piece of Nordic soundscapes.
