The 2001 album ''Plaguewielder'' by the two cult figures from the far north was probably like a kind of culture shock from DARKTHRONE for some fans of the first hour. The times of mangily produced black metal seemed to be finally over for DARKTHRONE as well. The cover artwork already suggested that they were now thinking of taking a somewhat different path. The production and the riffs, however, were the most unusual thing the Norwegians had ever done to date. With their 9th studio full lenght album, the two protagonists indeed delivered a much clearer and more powerful sound, similar to what was already indicated on ''Ravishing Grimness''. Once again, Nocturno Culto and Fenriz put the emphasis on midtempo anthems, whose roots are more in traditional eighties metal than in early nineties blasting. But despite the high rock'n roll factor, the duo's black metal attitude is unbroken. They didn't reach the cold atmosphere like in the times of ''Transilvanian Hunger'', but they still deliver plenty of raw, hateful Black Metal. Fans of the first hour might not be so happy with this recordings, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a Black Metal album of the very best quality! Here as a reissue in 180g heavy black vinyl with printed inner sleeve.
